How You Can Become a Member

join us logoBecoming a member shows that you want to move beyond simply being an attendee.  Membership is for you if want to be involved in some of the work of the church and are ready to make that commitment.

Candidacy

Any person may offer himself as a candidate for membership in Oral Baptist Church.  At the conclusion of any regular worship service during the invitation, candidates for membership may present themselves to the pastor and church. We accept members any one of the following ways.

By Baptism - You can know in your heart that you have received Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and agree to baptism by immersion according to the policies of this church. This would apply to new believers in Christ as well as those coming from a non-Baptist church.

By Letter -You can transfer your membership from another Baptist church of like faith and practice. This is called becoming a member “by letter.” Your membership is not official until a written response from your previous Baptist church has been received and approved by our church.

By Statement – You can make a statement of your prior conversion experience and subsequent baptism by immersion in a Baptist church of like faith and practice.  This is the least common way to become a member. Membership by statement is appropriate only when no letter is obtainable and after counseling with the pastor. An example of when this might be suitable is that your previous church no longer exists or it’s records have been destroyed.

What Then?

A three-fourths vote by those members present at the worship service grants "watchcare" membership to the candidate and authorizes the church clerk to request a letter from another Baptist Church if appropriate. The candidate becomes eligible for full membership only after baptism in this church, reception of letter, or on recommendation of the pastor after counseling.  Full membership is granted only after an affirmative three-fourths vote of those members present at a regular business meeting.
